ORTON & GRETCHEN

THE MEADOW was buzzing. Bees and hummingbirds flitted from leaf to petal, dabbling, searching, and moving on.

Orton crouched in the grass and filled his hands with dirt. He rubbed the palms together. He’d been doing this, off and on, for years. Nothing took the bloodstains away.

Gretchen tiptoed, pretending to be a ballerina. When she spotted orange hawkweed or yellow archangel she would reach down, yank it out of the soil, and toss it on the pile she was collecting. After the flowers dried and the leaves went brown, they would be perfect for her bouquet.

“The girl doesn’t look very upset,” said Gretchen with a nod toward the shelter.

“I bet she thinks all the bad things are over now and she’s home free,” said Orton.

“Isn’t she?” Gretchen asked.

“Nah. She’s got no idea.”

“Other people have stayed in the shelter,” said Gretchen.

“But they didn’t kill anybody,” said Orton. “They’re not bad ones. When something evil gets inside a person and that person doesn’t have a bad streak, it gets confused—like a hornet in a box. This girl’s just right.”

Gretchen considered this. “Are you scared?” she asked.

Orton crouched and picked up another handful of dirt. He considered the shelter. From here he could see Briar looking out the window.

“Well,” he said, “I’m not stupid.”

“You want to say the prayer again, to ward off witches?” she asked.

“Nah,” he said. “She’s no witch.”

“You want to say it again?” she asked, her lips pursed in a mournful expression.

“Yeah,” he told her. “Say the prayer.”
